MLA Forum
Vol. IV, Issue 2, December 15, 2005

Welcome to the 9th issue of the MLA Forum!

This electronic journal provides an avenue for members in the Michigan Library Association to effectively communicate and share topics and issues of interest to members in all types of libraries.

Does your library have a disaster plan to help protect, recover, and insure your library collection? With recent natural disasters, I am sure this subject is on all of our minds. Jeanne Drewes, from Michigan State University, has written a wonderful guide to help librarians prepare a disaster plan.

Have you ever considered providing a one-credit library instruction course? Beth Macleod, from Central Michigan, shares her experience at an academic library. This information could be helpful to any academic, school or public library.

Online classes are becoming more and more common in the academic world. Michael Flanagan, Superintendent of Public Instruction, has recently recommended to the Michigan State Board of Education that high school students complete an “online credit or non credit course or learning experience” to graduate from high school.   (http://www.michigan.gov/documents/ITEM_A_140901_7.pdf)

What implications will this have for librarians? Arjun Sabharwal, from Baker College, has written an article on the integration of library resources and services with course management systems.

Librarians in academic, public, school and special libraries all face similar challenges. Together we can learn and grow through the MLA Forum. Consider contributing to the profession and write an article or book review for the Forum!

Happy reading!
